Crop Pattern
Lentils or Masoor is grown in the States of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab/ Haryana. The sowing time starts from Nov-Dec and harvesting of the crop takes place during Feb - March. The peak arrival of lentils is in April. The procurement of masoorseeds from the farmers is between March - May.

Main Focus: Red Lentils - Masoor Dal which accounts for 80% - 85% of pulses trade.
India market is competitive due to Price, Proximity (Sri Lanka, UAE, B'desh) and Quality. There are limited production centres like MP, Indore, Bhopal, UP, Kanpur, Punjab and Haryana. They are regularly exported throughout the year. It is also a thin margin business - $ 2-3 Pmt; Govt. policy permits only 5kg consumer packing for exports.
Market Forecast for 2000-01
This year crop is estimated at 0.04 Mlnt due to favourable monsoon. The price trend will remain steady till September and with the fresh arrivals might tend to dip. Egypt, Sudan, UAE will be regular target markets with occasional entry from Sri Lanka.
